Speed of Light
A decade of broadband in the UK, and there is now fibre optics to make everything crystal clear and fast. For the occasion, some guys at UVA created an installation inspired by the glass cable, and turned it into a scattered story for the pleasure of the few “adventurous” people. The installation’s website describes the work as “exploring the themes of communication and modernity”, which I feel it does well in some ways.
Visiting this place, starring at the beams in sequences with great precision made me wonder if this is how I should feel if I was a machine or a computer. Yet I seemed to have found a great beauty in the colors, the patterns, and the precision of the movements. This cold and probably very complex technology is all around us, and I like the idea of it dancing under our feet in sync while feeding us with information.
You can see it at The OxO Tower until the 19th April 2010, I recommend the trip as an escape of the “normality”. Not to forget your camera as it is one of those places where they are fine with it.
